Antarctic Open
Teppo Makela (left) against Jussi Heinonen (right) in Antarctic Open II finals. Jussi eventually won 3-5. The world of table hockey reached new frontiers in the fall of 2007 when the first Antarctic Open tournament registered to world ranking was played in the Finnish Antarctic Research Station called Aboa (73°03'S, 13°25'W) at western Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. While the nearest permanent settlements are thousands of kilometres away, Antarctic Open was presumably also the first table hockey tournament, which included all the people in the radius of 300 kilometres. Second tournament was also organized during the spring 2008. PÖLY association, which is responsible for organizing the famous Helsinki Open tournament in Finland annually, donated the table used in the tournaments. Organizers apologize that they didn't inform rest of the world about the tournament beforehand, but due to unstable weather conditions and other logistical limitations, possible long-distance travellers would have been more than disappointed if the games would have had to be cancelled.

There were 11 attendants in both tournaments consisting of Finnish (9) and Swedish (2) scientists and logistic personnel. Everybody had had some experience with table hockey before the expedition took place. First unofficial Antarctic champion was geologist Jussi Heinonen, who is a member of PÖLY and has, at his best, competed at the final series of Finnish national ranking tournaments. Silver medal was won by the expedition cook Teppo Mäkelä, who has practiced with Kristian Iso-Tryykäri when he was still a little boy (long ago). Third place went to mechanical engineer Jari Pitkänen. Same three contestants were successful also in the 2nd tournament. This time the weather was so good that the finals were played outside on Basen nunatak, in a temperature of -5 C and under clear sunny sky.

Hans Österman comments his SM victory
Hans Österman Wins Swedish Masters. Hans Österman comments his victory at the Swedish Masters:

"I thought I was too old to win titles nowadays, but apparently I was mistaken. It seems that this was my lucky day. The turnover against Alexey in the semis was almost too much for my heart. When 3-1 turns 3-3 and your opponent is 2-0 up in the 7th game it is really hard to keep faith. But somehow I managed to focus on the effort, rather than the standings. That, and a good piece of luck, was the key to my win. Then beating wonder kid Roni in the final was really special. Maybe my age and experience turned out to be an advantage. It actually seemed like Roni was a bit nervous.
Finally: big hand for the organizers. SM 2008 belongs to best tournaments ever."

The Executive Committee has agreed on awarding additional nominations places for those nations which have their players among top 10 at the WTHT 2006/2007 final ranking. This rule was set before the beginning of the current season. This rule says that up to THREE players from a nation can get the direct WCh nomination. The rule also says that the champion from the last WCh is not counted among top 10 for awarding the direct nominations.

As we can see from the current WTHT ranking the direct nomination would be awarded to: Finland (2 players ... also thanks to 11th place), Sweden (3 players + Hans Österman as the reigning World Champion), Latvia (2 players), Russia (2 players) and the Czech Republic (1 player). Three more WTHT tournaments are scheduled for this WTHT season which means the final ranking can be changed and awarded additional WCh nominations as well. Internet promotion of table hockey
We are in the middle of a media revolution. All you need to make your own movie is a computer and a small digital camera. Through various web sites you can get a big audience for free.

For the moment www.youtube.com is the leading site. Every day a large number of new, short movies are published here. Actually, some of the clips are about table hockey. The offered format is perfect for a table hockey match – or just some minutes for nice tricks and moves. Here you can see some spectacular world class tricks by Roni Nuttunen. And here is one of the final matches from Oresund Cup 2006 with Finn Fries and the world champion, Hans Osterman. And here, an unknown master of the game is training, inspired by some Pink Panter music

Of course, this is only the beginning. www.youtube.com is a great possibility for any table hockey federation or club to reach new, young table hockey players. Join the web revolution and become youtubers!
